Corns & Callous
Both corns and callous are a result of repetitive intermittent pressure. This can occur from poorly fitting footwear or as a result of how you walk. Initially the corn and callosity will be debrided. We will then provide you with advice as to how to prevent or minimise its reoccurrence and pain. However unless the initial cause is addressed they do have a tendency to reoccur and therefore may need ongoing routine care.
Verrucae or Warts
Verrucae or plantar warts are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus. There is no single effective method of treating verruca. The choice of treatment depends on the pain you are in, the position and the size of the lesion. Treatment methods include cryosurgery (freezing), electrosurgery and combination therapy.
Plantar Fasciitis
This is a repetitive strain injury to the fascia of the foot that often is long lasting and very painful. It classically manifests itself as pain first thing upon getting out of bed in the mourning, eases somewhat on walking then gets to be painful once again later in the day. It can be confused with other conditions and a painful heel should always require be seen to make a diagnosis.
Ingrown Toenails
Ingrown Toenails can affect any nail but commonly the first toenail is affected. They are usually very painful and lead to secondary infections. Whilst sometimes they can be treated conservatively usually a small operation called a nail wedge resection with phenol ablation is performed. This results in quick pain relief and in nearly 100% of cases, no reoccurrence.
Flat Feet
Flat feet or pronated feet are commonly seen as one of the main causes of injury of the lower limb. The age of the patient as well as degree of pronation must be assessed before undertaking treatment. Although flat feet are often seen as a bad thing they are very common with the majority of the population having a foot that flattens upon walking.
Bunions (Hallux Valgus)
A bunion is deformity of the big toe which develops when it deviates towards the smaller toes. They are more frequently seen in females as they tend to wear narrower footwear. In some instances they can become painful. Initial treatment of bunions involves conservative intervention however failing this surgery may then be considered.
Sporting Injuries
![]() The repetitive high impact nature of sports places further stress on the musculoskeletal system of the lower extremity. Many sporting injuries are a result of poor biomechanics and alignment. We see many recreational and professional athletes participating in football, cricket, athletics, tennis, golf, basketball and dancing. Common sporting injuries we treat include Achilles tendonitis, Shin Splints and Stress Fractures. Childrens Conditions
The growing child can present with many conditions which are of concern to the parents. Conditions which are commonly seen in children include growing pains in the legs and feet, flat feet, heel pain, in and out toeing gait and knocked knees. In most cases these conditions are treated conservatively.
Diabetes
![]() Having good foot health is particularly important in people with diabetes as it can affect the circulation and sensation of their feet. It is recommended people with diabetes have regular foot check ups to minimize the risk of developing long term complications as a result of diabetes.
Discoloured and thickened toenails
The appearance of our toenails can change for a number of reasons. Trauma, infection, illness, chemicals and medication can all affect the appearance of our toenails. Where a fungal infection is involved the toenail can be treated with a topical lacquer to eradicate the infection. Thickened nails can be managed by reducing the toenail to a normal level
